CHANDIGARH, PUNJAB (KP) - Sikh organizations across the globe came out in support of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since November 14th, protesting the ongoing illegal detention and incarceration of Sikh youths in India’s prisons despite having served their full sentences.
Some of the prisoners noted by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh include Bhai Gurmit Singh, Shamsher Singh, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh (both imprisoned at Burrail Jail, Chandigarh since 1995), Bhai Lal Singh (imprisoned at Nabha’s Maximum Security Jail) and Bhai Gurdip Singh (imprisoned at Gurbarg Jail since 1990) and many others who are languishing in the Indian prison system without proper justice.
The United Nations and various human rights organizations have routinely cited India’s defunct judicial system as severely “corrupt” and “organized lawlessness” with judicial backlogs raging from as much as 10-15 years, where many detainees eventually perish within the prison system despite having served their sentences or being cleared of their crimes.
Perhaps Bhai Gurbaksh Singh’s hunger strike can further highlight these grave human rights violations in a country that deceptively boasts itself to be the world’s largest democracy.
