RALLY AGAINST SGPC TASK FORCE INCIDENT

AMRITSAR SAHIB (KP) - In the last week of July, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) showed its true face when several gursikhs belonging to Akhand Kirtani Jatha and other organizations had gathered to have a discourse with Avtar Makkar, president of SGPC when suddenly they were attacked by the SGPC Task Force which resulted in beadbi of their Kesh (hair) and removing of turbans which is regarded as the most shameful act in the Sikh community.

In response to the disgraceful act of the SGPC members, Akhand Kirtani Jatha organized a peaceful protest and demanded the guilty to be called at Akal Takht Sahib and punished for their misdeeds. The Jatha also demanded public apology from Makkar. The 11 member executive committee of AKJ presented their demands and requests in a form of a letter to the Jathedar of Akal Takhat Sahib. At the time, three victims of the abuse by the SGPC Task Force Mukhtiar Singh Patiala, Jagjit Singh and Tejwant Singh were also present and informed the Jathedar of the events that took place. To discuss the matter the Jathedar had called for a meeting on August 22nd which was attended by SGPC staff and several members of the AKJ.

Many members of AKJ including Bhai Bakhsheesh Singh, Bhai Paramjit Singh, Bhai Nirmalbir Singh, Bhai Avtar Singh, Bhai Maninderpal Singh, Bhai Arjan Singh, Bhai R.P. Singh and Bhai S.P.Singh blamed Makkar for he events that took place in Patiala and requested the Jathedar to summon Makkar at Akal Takht Sahib and have him publicly apologize to the sangat. They stated that SGPC Task Force was also responsible for it since they insulted the Sikhi saroop (Sikh identity) which has hurt the sentiments of many members of the Sikh community.
